The 3rd November 2020 will have the United Kingdon celebrating the beloved sandwich!
Crisp sandwiches, chip butties, BLT, tuna baguettes, a cheeky nandos wrap... whatever your sandwich of choice is, today is the day to enjoy it.
John Montagu is the man we should thank, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich is located in Kent and originally spelt Sondwic, Sandwic and then recorded as Sandwice in 1086 - ultimately meaning "Market Town on Sandy Soil" (not quite the sandwich I was imagining) .
As a great lover of card games, John Montagu is said to have ordered his meat between two slices of bread so that his cards would not get greasy from his fingers. As others starting emulating this grand new idea, "the same as Sandwich" eventually became just "a sandwich" and thus our British sandwich was born.
In light of the new lockdown, why not spend today celebrating the sandwich at your local businesses? Grab a BLT for breakfast from Latimer's Sandwich Compay, go for a deli option from Sandwich Sandwich and finish off with a delicious dinner of a wrap from Spoke and Stringer - let's support each other in these challenging times whislt celebrating our beloved sandwich!
